DESCRIPTION OF BALSAM MOUNTAIN PRESERVE

One of the largest parcels of unspoiled land in the region, Balsam Mountain Preserve is like no other place you will ever see. Beacuse stewardship of the land is the community's hallmark, its 4,400 scenic acres will be home to only 350 families. Protected by a 3,000 acre conservation easement and bordered by the pristine wilderness of the Nantahala National Forest, Balsam Mountain Preserve has the unmatched beauty of a community within a park. For all of its private grandeur, the community is located only 38 miles west of Asheville and is easily accessed by the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway.

Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course:

The Palmer design team has taken painstaking efforts to carefully place this ecologically designed, breathtaking and challenging layout. This spectacular course offers views and elevation changes sure to make for dramatic and memorable rounds of golf.

38 miles of Streams, Creeks and Waterfalls:

Experience it firsthand with private trout fishing on bountiful pure freshwater streams, creeks and waterfalls.

Equestrian Center:

The new Equestrian Center offers boarding in its stable, a practice ring and expert instruction.

Nature Center:

Our Nature Center, staffed by two full-time Naturalists, can help you graps the nuances of the surrounding wilderness.

Ruby Valley Camp, our exciting new sports facility encompasses a fully equipped fitness center, tennis, swimming, amphitheater, and pavilion.

Over 50 miles of extensive hiking, biking and horseback riding trails take you to the heart of our spectacular mountainscape.

Remote Campsites:

Remote wilderness camping is available with two 150-year old restored cabins on-site. Alternatively, Dark Ridge Creek campground provides two permanent cabin-tents, two camping platforms, a pavilion with cooking and eating facilities, hot showers and bathrooms for those with more of an eye towards convenience.

100 Mile Views:

With high elevations, as well as a special ridgeline building protection convenant, Balsam Mountain Preserve offers 100-mile panoramic and, most importantly, uninterrupted views of the Appalachians. No new construction will ever mar the visual integrity of the surrounding mountain vistas.

Cool Summers:

Not one, but two ancient mountains form the heart of this cherished property - Double Top at 5,481 feet and Sugar Loaf at 4,480 feet - guarantteing cool temperatures even at the height of summer.
